The Goal of the Muslim Brotherhood

The Muslim Brotherhood is a difficult subject to tackle. Some of this is the fault of others – there appears to be significant bias against them in many quarters. Some of this is their fault – they are a closed organization accountable to no government oversight.

Some of it is due to the nature of their task. Their goal – to be examined below – is currently being pursued in the arena of politics. It is the nature of politics to appeal to as many as possible, presenting one’s ideas in as amenable a form as possible. The general public is left wondering what is real and what is spin, though usually most politicians can be pegged somewhere along a definitive spectrum.

This is true of the Brotherhood as well, which has fully embraced the vagaries, if not the hypocrisy, of the political game.

Yet despite their changing postures and the confusion it engenders, almost everyone understands the Muslim Brotherhood to be a conservative, religious entity seeking greater integration of Islam into the fabric of society and government.

The difficulty is in establishing what this means. Detractors make them out to be fascists, while promoters paint them as democrats. Brotherhood rhetoric – tailored to the audience – can lend credence to either extreme.

Therefore, the best solution is to examine what the Brotherhood says to itself. Earlier I partially translated and analyzed a book distributed by the Brotherhood which assembles excerpts from the speeches of Hassan al-Banna, the group’s founder.

Our goal

The Quran teaches that there is a paradise, the gardens of Eden, prepared for those who abandoned their desires and instead followed what God revealed to his messengers, those who firmly believe that there is none worthy of worship but the one who created all that is in existence. The believers, whatever name they call themselves, Jews, Christians, Sabians; anyone who believes in God and the last day and strives to follow the books God sent down to his Messengers, will be in Paradise forever and will receive whatever they desire. The Quran teaches that there is Hell, prepared for the disbelievers; those who reject what God has revealed and choose to worship other than God, the one who made them. They tell lies about God and claim that God has partners, children, etc. God will punish them for what they have done. The Quran's guide to the best conduct shows man how to live his life in an honorable, righteous way. It brings man out of ignorance and teaches him what he did not know. In the end, it is all about whether the person chooses to believe or not, whether the people decide to live life according to the rules of God. Those who choose God will be radiant on the day of judgment and We pray that none of us will be in the fire.

 Basic Principles and Characteristics

Islam is the religion of truth. It is the embodiment of the code of life that Allah, the Creator and Lord of the universe, has revealed for the guidance of mankind. For the proper development of human life, man needs two elements: (a) the resources to maintain life and to fulfill the material needs of the individual and society, and (b) knowledge of the principles of individual and social behavior to enable man to fulfill himself and to maintain justice and tranquillity in human life. The Lord of the universe has provided for both of these in full measure. To cater to the material needs of man, He has put all of nature's resources at his disposal. To provide for his spiritual, social, and cultural needs, He has raised His prophets from among men and has revealed to them the code of life that can guide man's steps to the right path. This code of life is known as Islam, the religion preached by all of the prophets of Allah.
